“The food we eat has lost a large part of its organic essence and has instead become a manufactured artifact, boxed, wrapped, and contained in plastic.

This artificiality in the way we produce and distribute food is linked to yet another problem of epic proportions. The flood of plastic refuse, much of it from food packaging, is a rising concern across the world. Invented barely a century ago, plastic has become one of the most ubiquitous substances on this planet.

Today, 5.5 billion tons of plastic waste litter the oceans and land. In the seas, ‘garbage patches’ gather with surfaces as large as twice the size of the state of Texas.

These plastics disintegrate into micro-plastics that enter the food chain and ultimately become part of the food we eat. Once ingested, these micro-plastics seem to alter our cellular structure and our own very human nature.

Food plastic is becoming plastic food. Perhaps we, too, share the same fate.”
